An Introduction
Welcome to Triple Trouble, a sports commentary website run by three college seniors writing out of their parents’ basements dorm rooms. When Bill Simmons launched his sports and pop-culture website, Grantland, earlier this month, we were devastated. It meant that our grand scheme to get famous and have Subway sponsor us rambling about L.A. Noire and bars in New York City wouldn’t work out! In reality, this blog has a very different focus in a lot of ways than Grantland, and probably most other sports blogs out there. I’ll try and explain what we’re doing here.
- Myself and the other two editors love watching, discussing, and sometimes even playing sports. We figured it’d be a good call to write down some of our finer moments for posterity. It will help me answer the question I’m dreading my future children asking me someday: “So Dad, what did you actually learn in college?” Well, hopefully at least something about sports (and The Meaning of Life) that I can pass on to my kids. This is sports from the perspective of amateur sportswriters; as college kids with jobs, school, and other responsibilities, we realize there’s not as much time to devote to sports anymore as we get older. So while we obviously want to write a lot, we won’t and can’t throw up content constantly like ESPN or YahooSports or anywhere else where people actually get paid to write about sports.
- Writing is both important and fun to me, and the website should reflect that. So please comment and criticize the writing so that we improve, because that’s one reason we started the blog, to get better at writing, by writing. Expect a few new columns, opinions, and takes every week.
- The focus of the blog is sports, and while we may foray into a little bit of the other entertainment media and elsewhere, we wanted to construct a blog about sports, for sports fans, across the spectrum, to bandwagon and die-hard alike.
- The cornerstones of the blog are the Triple Trouble columns. Named for a pretty decent Beastie Boys song, the column involves a running discussion between the three editors about a certain topic in sports. So much of our sports fandom revolves around these discussions and we wanted to capture that in an articulate way in the columns. Sometimes we’ll even have a guest join us.
- At the core, we’re all Midwestern guys (or Midwestern transplants living at the moment in DC and Arizona) who enjoy talking about sports in a no-nonsense way. That being said, we all have our own opinions and our own teams that we follow, so we also want to look into the interactions sports fans have with each other, especially as sports writing and sports fandom is changing so much with the explosion of the Internet. We’ll be recommending and referencing others’ well-written and/or interesting articles and sports commentary along the way to give our readers context for our columns.
Thanks for reading, and hope you enjoy the site launch! Send your feedback to tripletroubleblog@gmail.com, and you can follow us on Twitter @triple33trouble and on Facebook at facebook.com/tripletroubleblog.
